SEA MONSTERS 3 - ARTIST PROFILE #8

Here it is, the 8th part in our ongoing series of artist profiles for SEA MONSTERS 3; our festival of Brighton's best this January.
Today's featured artists are the progressive rock thundercats thedealwasforthediamond!

Keeping their line up to a taut quartet of dual guitars, bass, and drums, the music that TDWFTD create couldn't be more complex. Their songs are rhythmically intricate, with graceful and subtle dynamics creating the effect of four men who are seemingly psychically linked, with break-neck rhythmic shifts that occur before you have even registered them. Each of their songs takes you on a journey, with soaring, epic peaks and rumbling melodic lows. With enough post rock euphoria to melt your brain, thedealwasforthediamond are an absolute must see band at this years festival!

FLUME at The Green Door Store Tuesday 22nd of Jan

Flume is a very young Sydney beat maker who’s grabbed the attention of XLR8R, Electronic Beats, Triple J, FBi and many more in less than a year.

Flume got his first taste for producing at age 13 (!) from the most unlikely of places – a music production program he found in a cereal box. It began Flume’s obsession with all things synthetic, and started his addiction for plug-ins, sample packs & vintage analogue hardware.

Flume’s live show is now coming into full effect after selling out 2 national Australian tours and by the end of 2012 Flume would of played prestigious Australian festivals Splendour in the Grass, Parklife and Foreshore as well as a very special event in Sydney called Vivid LIVE at Sydney’s most famous venue The Sydney Opera House.

He’s still more busy than ever producing – recently releasing an original with Anna Lunoe called ‘I Met You’, remixes for Hermitude (Elefant Tracks), The Aston Shuffle and Ta-ku as well as putting the finishing touches on his debut album.

“…a solid piece of soulful beat work.” – XLR8R, scored 8.6

“Flume’s “Sleepless” is the perfect pop record for anyone who’d never even look at what’s going down in the official charts: big, bouncy, super accessible, yet still a little weird in all it’s wobbly warmth. A hook, a beat, more warmth – future soul from Sydney, I’d say. 8/10″- Lodown Magazine

KODALINE at The Green Door Store Monday 11th of Feb

Currently maintaining an air of understated mystery (their Facebook bio used to state, merely, “we’re four lads in a band”, Kodaline are soon set to unveil themselves to the world with these first four tracks recorded with Steve Harris (producer for Dave Matthews band, mixer for U2).

Steve, Mark and drummer Vinny May – all aged 22 and 23 – have been working towards this moment for much of their young lives. Growing up in houses just two minutes away from each other in Swords, a working class town near Dublin airport, Steve and Mark met aged eight, when they were the only boys in the school choir. “We were there to pick up girls, of course,” jokes Mark.

Six years later, at a youth retreat, both were placed in the same house and both took guitars. A musical bond was formed over late night singalongs. Returning to Swords, they recruited Vinny, who also lived two minutes away (“Swords is a small place, for a big town,” says Steve), and set about forming the first of myriad bands.

Some of them had surprising success. As 17 year-olds in the four-piece 21 Demands, they were runners-up on the RTE TV show You’re A Star, and scored a chart-topping hit on the back of it. Give Me A Minute was the first Irish Number 1 by an unsigned band. They’re coolly dismissive about the whole thing: about the show (“There are loads of them in Ireland”) and the song (“It was terrible!”).

They’re perfectly serious, however, about Kodaline, the line-up of which was recently completed by bassist Jason Boland. Having spent two years doing nothing but writing, with just a belief in their talent keeping them afloat, Kodaline is their be-all and end-all. “I dropped out of college and my parents were just freaking out saying, What the fuck are you doing?” says Steve. “There was no deal in place and no money, we just thought, Fuck it, let’s have a crack at it.”

The band’s name, incidentally, means absolutely nothing for the moment – they wanted something they could take ownership of. “We made it up ourselves, but we later found out it’s a character on fuckin’ World Of Warcraft,” says Mark. “I promise you, we’ve never even played the game. It’s just a bizarre coincidence.”

Mark and Steve clearly have a strong friendship. “We can basically read each other’s mind at this point because we’ve known each other so long,” says Steve.

Currently planning another EP, live dates and – further down the line – a debut album, Kodaline are now they’re hoping their music will provide therapy for others too. “Music should have a purpose, you know,” says Steve, “Our purpose is honesty”

SEA MONSTERS 3 - ARTIST PROFILE #7

Here it is, the 7th part in our ongoing series of artist profiles for SEA MONSTERS 3; our festival of Brighton's best this January.
It's the masters of doooooooom SEA BASTARD!

From the south coast of the UK, SEA BASTARD were formed from the ashes of Doom bands Jovian and Funeral Hag. Fusing uncompromising lethargy and dark Metal grooves, SEA BASTARD have garnered a cult following (and we do mean "cult"... think goat sacrifice, and you'll be on the right track). As part of OIB vs. BIZARRO WORLD, the slowest band in the UK will be tackling the fastest band in the UK, performing the work of the legend that is MOTORHEAD! Expect monolithic, world destroying versions of your favorite Motorhead tunes.
