Anyone needing further proof of the strength of Brighton’s musical underground need look no further than the 3rd installment of 'Sea Monsters - The Best of Brighton' compilation: Packed with 25 seminal tracks from the most important bands in Brighton, Sea Monsters 3 unleashes almost two hours of unmissable music across two incredible CDs and digital.
Since last years critically acclaimed Sea Monsters 2, which featured artists such as Tall Ships, Fear Of Men and Sons of Noel And Adrian, One Inch Badge have promoted over 200 shows throughout the UK for over 500 bands. That’s one serious amount of talent!
Choosing from the innumerable Brightonian artists on the scene was always a daunting task, but some always burn too bright to be ignored. The highlights this year were: Psychedelic space/jazz three piece The Physics House Band, who since Sea Monsters have gone on to sign with Blood & Biscuits – home of Three Trapped Tigers, Tall Ships and Sleep Party People. Kraut-Grunge-Poppers Traams recently signed to Fat- Cat records following the Sea Monsters Festival. Songstress Abi Wade fusing of incredible vocals, beat’s and immense cello manipulation have lead her to sign to Brighton indie label Love Thy Neighbour, and receive an invitation to tour the UK + Europe with Patrick Wolf. Four piece Kins lush, layered and elegant pop gems have had them compared to Radiohead, Fever Ray and Alt-J. Gnarwolves who’s fast and frenetic live shows have since seen them sign to sign to Big Scary Monsters and amass over 5k Facebook fans in under a year, there is no wonder that they’re being billed as the UK’s favourite new punk band. Songsmith Jacko Hooper who has caught the attention and hearts of the continent with collective youtube hits of over a 1⁄4 million.

YOUTH LAGOON

One Inch Badge presents:

Delighted to welcome one of our all time office favourites to Brighton! This will be YL's ONLY headline show in the South East.

Trevor Powers, whose stage name is Youth Lagoon, began writing his debut albumThe Year of Hibernation in 2010. Based around the idea of psychological dysphoria, Powers tried to document the trailsof his mind through songs of minimalism and hypnotic ambiance. Powers later described his writing process as "my mind communicating with me, not the other way around...it can take me to scary places but I've realized those bizarre thoughts I have don't define me." After signing with Mississippi-based label Fat Possum Records in 2011, he toued much of the following year before going back into solitude to write.
Wondrous Bughouse, Powers' sophomore album (due March 5 worldwide via Fat Possum), was spawned from what he describes as "becoming more fascinated with the human psyche and where the spiritual meets the physical world." During the time he wrote, Powers became intrigued with the metaphysical universe and blending those ideas with pop music.

"Youth Lagoon is something so personal to me because writing music is how I sort my thoughts, as well as where I transfer my fears," explains Powers.

"My mental state is usually pretty sporadic...a lot of this record was influenced by a fear of mortality but embracing it at the same time. Realizing that human life is only great because it is temporary. Experimenting with ideas about dimensions. I'm not a gifted speaker, so explaining things is difficult for me. But music always makes sense."

THE SHEEPDOGS

One Inch Badge proudly presents:

THE SHEEPDOGS

One of OIB's all time favourites, with a live show like no other it is with great pleasure that we have this very special show from THE SHEEPDOGS

From the always silky-smooth three-part vocal harmonies prominent in tracks like “Why?” or the single “I Don’t Know” through to the dual-guitar interplay and pulsing rhythmic beds found on, well, pretty much every tune, The Sheepdogs don’t so much bring listeners “back in time” as they do weave the past with the present for an undeniable aural experience that appeals to audiences of all ages.

That appeal was recently proven when The Sheepdogs, via 1.5 million public votes, were declared the winners of a contest that found them as the first unsigned band to grace the cover of iconic rock rag Rolling Stone and, subsequently, landed them a deal with Atlantic Records. To the many that first caught wind of this decade-defying musical force surrounding that swirl of media attention, they may seem like something of an overnight success, though in reality, The Sheepdogs are anything but.

Since having their unshaven mugs showcased in Rolling Stone and onstage at Bonnaroo, though, it seems the band has finally found their break and are ready to capitalize on the opportunity. “It used to be that we wanted to quit our day jobs and just make music,” says Currie of the band’s aspirations. “Now, it’s about hitting the road, playing some kick-ass shows, and getting ready to impress people with a new record.”

PELICAN

One Inch Badge proudly presents:

Us here at One Inch Badge are really excited to welcome back the tour de force that is PELICAN!
This is going to be an absolutely incredible show for all you instrumentalists!

Pelican is a post-metal quartet from Chicago, Illinois. Established in 2000, the band stems from their native post-metal scene and is known for their atmospheric and entirely instrumental style. They have released four studio albums and four EPs and gained television exposure.

The band is known for its dense combinations of different melodies and extended track lengths. Its distinctive sound draws from stoner rock, doom metal, post-rock, and other influences. Larry Herweg, Trevor de Brauw, and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec also make up three-quarters of the band Tusk.
Previously signed to Hydra Head Records (which is owned and operated by Aaron Turner of Isis), Pelican is now part of the Southern Lord Records roster.
In 2012 Pelican announced the release of their new E.P titled Ataraxia/Taraxis. In April 2012 they also embarked on a European and UK tour, playing several shows across England as well as shows in Italy, Germany, Finland, the Dunk Festival in Belgium and the Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands. The support bands for this tour included Bo Ningen and Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster in the UK, and Tombs in Mainland Europe. And in June 2012, they notified the public of the absence of Laurent.

STRAND OF OAKS - Free Show

It is with great pleasure that we announce this very special FREE ENTRY show from one of the most talked-about artists of the year ahead... STRAND OF OAKS.

All of the songs Timothy Showalter writes as STRAND OF OAKS are based on true stories. And in Strand of Oaks songs, lovers get divorced, murder John Belushi’s drug dealer, go bowling with mythical giants, watch their youth slip away and commune with John F. Kennedy’s illegitimate son. Obviously, Showalter has allowed himself many liberties with what constitutes the truth, and his commingling of fact and fiction, of humor and heartbreak simultaneously distinguishes him from the bearded, acoustic-toting singer-songwriters he’s so easily compared to: immerse yourself in a Strand of Oaks record and confessionals turn into metaphor, autobiography transferred into tall tales.

The self-released, self-promoted Killdragon earned an “eMusic selects” designation and an 8.1 score at notoriously fickle Pitchfork. In the years that followed, Strand of Oaks found itself touring with Eric Bachmann’s CROOKED FINGERS and THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH, both heroes and peers.

This has been Strand of Oaks’ M.O. over the span of three albums, the latest of which is DARK SHORES, the most direct and accomplished to date.

Dark Shores delivers on the promise of its title in the same way Leave Ruin and Pope Killdragon did: this is a record of encroaching uncertainty, of diving into the unknown, of risk in the face of vast, unforgiving nature. But as always, within the auspices of Strand of Oaks, Timothy Showalter’s reality is flipped into devastating, absurd and always compelling theater.

MILO GREENE

Very proud to be announcing a show from MILO GREENE!

The four voices of Milo Greene weave and blend into one voice, creating songs that live and breathe simultaneously as many and as one, with the breadth of an omniscient, collective consciousness.

These melodies invoke long drives down the California coast, and the feeling of leaving home. There is something meditative about it, as though it asks to be listened to alone and given one's full attention. The lyrics are vague enough to be questioned, yet specific enough to conjure certain smells, tastes and feelings, the idea of an intimate moment and the implicit sadness present in all things simply beautiful. Guitar lines swell and recede as ocean waves would. A slight dissonance can be sensed underneath a seemingly passive exterior; a tension can be found in passing tones that invoke jazz harmony and the sense of waiting for something really big to happen, a sense of growing inevitably older while grasping at the threads of youth.

It is the perspective of someone looking back on life or lost love, of standing on a mountaintop overlooking a vast landscape. There is the sense that everything becomes clearer at a distance, less emotionally tumultuous and perhaps more meaningful. When the songs reach their closing, the listener is like a dreamer waking from a dream that can only vaguely be remembered...

SEA MONSTERS 3 - ARTIST PROFILE #13

Here it is, the 13th part in our ongoing series of artist profiles for SEA MONSTERS 3; our festival of Brighton's best this January.
Todays artist is the introspective but unbelievably epic PHORIA!

Combining beautifully haunting melodies and soaring string arrangements, PHORIA paint a sentimental soundscape recalling the styles of Radiohead, Sigor Rós, or Bjork.
With an air of spectral mystery surrounding them, their vision of the world is equal parts bitter and sweet, making PHORIA elegant, eclectic, and utterly unmissable!
