STUART WARWICK - Krampus Is Coming Vol. 3 - Artist Profile #1

STUART WARWICK

Stuart Warwick has long been a One Inch Badge favourite, since way back when he used to play under the moniker Jacob's Stories. His eerie, simple, haunting music chills us to our very core in a beautiful, whispering way. Check out this choreographed for Ex-Gay, taken from his album "The Ordeal"...

Coming into his own in a live environment, we've lost track of the number of times we've stood in a hushed venue whilst a room full of people lean in, holding their breath to hear the quiet subtleties in his quavering otherworldly voice as he sings about troubling and violent subject matter like a voice in your head.

Stuart's track for KRAMPUS IS COMING Vol. 3 is a curious interpretation of the fireside favourite, "Silent Night"; a well known melody which he yet again manages to make all his own by the sheer uniqueness of his performance.

Be sure not to miss Stuart Warwick performing (along with other great acts and DJs) at the official KRAMPUS Vol. 3 launch party, @ Green Door Store, Thursday December 22nd!

RELEASED TUESDAY DECEMBER 6TH 2011

One Inch Badge’s annual Xmas ‘KRAMPUS’ release returns again for 2011
, this time in the form of an extremely limited-edition (to just 25!) USB Xmas Jumper designed by Thom Mountford!!

Each Xmas Jumper comes with a hand stamped and numbered One Inch Badge tag and a limited-edition Krampus is Coming Vol. 3 USB flash drive, featuring 6 of our favourite bands of 2011 all offering up their own unique take on the ‘Christmas hit’, as well as Thom Mountford designed album artwork and an OIB Records sampler.

STUART WARWICK [www.stuartwarwick.com]: Heartbreakingly beautiful – the words that spring to mind when you hear Stuart Warwick sing. Having performed alongside the likes of Bat For Lashes, Beirut, and Zola Jesus, Stuart’s hauntingly simple, yet slightly off kilter take on ‘Silent Night’ is ethereal and elegant. Stuart Warwick (formally Jacob Stories) is a true Brighton hero and this marks his first physical release since 2010’s stunning album ‘The Ordeal’.

MUNICH [www.facebook.com/thisismunich]: Brighton five piece Munich have been proving their talent over the last few years by writing great anthemic pop tunes, playing such festivals as Glastonbury and support slots for Bombay Bicycle Club, Morning Parade, Mona, Graham Coxon, and Chapel Club. Their epic widescreen sound is tonally rich, passionate rabble-rousing modern indie at it’s very best.

RUM COMMITTEE [www.rumcommittee.com]: Hailing from the murky depths of Booze Town itself, Rum Com are an eight-man hip-hop army, with the refreshingly inventive beats, razor-sharp rhymes and the swagger of a herd of elephants.

SOFT ARROWS [http://softarrows.blogspot.com]: The plan was simple enough, “do a band”. Two guys go into a run down practice room and emerge months later as Soft Arrows. Plan accomplished. Taking the raw, direct energy of a garage band and the expansive, wavering melodies of shoegaze and playing in near darkness, Soft Arrows take ownership on the limitations of being a two piece band and turn them to their advantage, creating big sounds and claustrophobic vibes.

ROOKS [www.myspace.com/intherookery]: Genuine, full-throttle, out-and-out garage punk, sweating bullets and spitting blood like there’s no tomorrow. Rooks take no prisoners and don’t hold back.

JIMI SWELLS [www.soundcloud.com/nullifier]: The NULLIFIER front-man steps out in his solo guise with this finely-crafted blissed out dream pop ballad of modern whimsy and acerbically self-deprecating wit.

KRAMPUS IS COMING VOLUME 3 is limited to just 25 jumpers and is only available from www.oneinchbadge.com, Resident Music Brighton (01273 606312), Boy Parker Brighton (01273 687768)

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

NEON INDIAN returns this Autumn with Era Extraña”, his much-anticipated second album, released 10th October on Transgressive Records.

Neon Indian is the brainchild of Alan Palomo, who's 2009 debut “Psychic Chasms” not only earned the 20 year-old a place on numerous year-end lists, but assisted the forming of a genre that, though known by a few names now (hypnagogic pop, glo-fi, chillwave), summoned a very unique and specific electro-mangled sound. NME, Pitchfork, Dazed, Rolling Stone and the Fly all praised Palomo for his adventurous new sound and he was invited to open for bands ranging from Massive Attack and The Flaming Lips to Phoenix and Chromeo.

After nearly two years on the road following the success of his debut, Palomo returns this autumn with his proper follow-up LP, “Era Extraña”. This time around, we see a darker shaded sound document that tosses somewhere between an 8-bit shoegaze record and peering through the fence of a teenage apocalypse drive-in flick. Written and recorded last winter an apartment in Helsinki, Finland during its short solstice days, Era Extraña was ice sculpted from arpeggiated synth-scapes and scribbled journal entries made during his stint there alone in constant solitude. "It's the closest you can get to feeling like you're at the edge of the earth," he says. "And there were moments where I lost sight of what I was really there to do."

The sample-happy stylings of his previous efforts have been traded in for acid-stained commodore 64 jams (See 'Polish Girl, 'Future Sick') and bit-pulped guitar sludge ballads (see 'Hex Girlfriend', 'The Blindside Kiss'). All throughout, the undulating moods of the record are guided by a haunted three-part instrumental titled Heart: Attack, Heart: Decay, and Heart: Release. Once completed, the layers were thawed and reassembled by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT), who mixed the album and did additional production with Palomo at his Tarbox Studios. The album sessions there were briefly taken on a scenic detour by a drop-in four-song EP collaboration with The Flaming Lips which was released earlier this year.

The album’s Spanish title plays with the loose-hinges of the word extraña, which not only directly translates into 'strange', but also means to 'command the act of longing'. These themes of feeling an eerie absence in strange new timesareexplored throughout the album as a whole in his teenage-ethos-peppered lyrical musings in an end-days obsessed climate. Much of this is inspired by an ongoing love affair with the notion of what cyberpunk means in a year like 2011. The feeling can best be described in a recent interview where he noted, "We're now living in the era mysticized by a lot of future-geared 70s and 80s cinema, but it’s definitely not quite how they imagined it."

SAMIYAM to support DOOM on UK TOUR!

Very excited to announce the addition of SAMIYAM (aka Sam Baker) to the upcoming DOOM (MF Doom) UK tour, this November!

Coming out with one of the most anticipated and long-awaited albums so far on Brainfeeder, Samiyam makes woozy, off-centre hip hop instrumentals drawing heavily on Baker’s love of electronic funk but never in hock to it. Intensely detailed and carrying considerable emotional weight, Samiyam’s tracks stand on their own without the need for an MC’s intervention

TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER // FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER

DOOM

JOSIAH WOLF (WHY?) & LIZ WOLF added to the bill for JEFFREY LEWIS & THE JUNKYARD!

We are extremely pleased to announce the addition of the immensely talented husband and wife duo, JOSIAH WOLF (Why?) & LIZ WOLF to the already stella line-up for the upcoming JEFFREY LEWIS & THE JUNKYARD show at The Haunt, Brighton on November 4th!

Josiah Wolf, known as essential WHY? member and multiinstrumentalist unparalleled, has released his solo-debut “Jet Lag” in 2010, proving that warm folk melodies and easy psychedelia can still excite. Starting to learn the drums at the age of nine, Josiah constantly developed his musical skills and excelled at merging marimba, drums and soft guitar riffs. This potential is also mirrored in his live versions, where his one-man show is likely to sound like a full band. However, not willing to rely on samples and prerecorded tracks, he soon asked Liz Hodson, later to become his wife, to join his musical journey. A quite good decision, since her voice, reminding of Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, serves as a perfect addition to his rhythms. Listening to Liz playing Rhodes piano, Microkorg and bass, juxtaposed by Josiah holding it down on marimba, drum kit and guitar, is never the same. Every show is different and an experiment, constantly spawning blueprints for new songs.

One Inch Badge presents:

65DAYSOFSTATIC perform Silent Running!

Yes!

Post-Rock legends 65DAYSOFSTATIC bring their specially commisioned live soundtrack from classic Sci-Fi film Silent Running to the Duke Of York's Cinema, Brighton!

With their layered, intense barrages of sounds and textures, 65daysofstatic fuse keyboards, drum samples, angry post-rock guitars and gritty synth noise to create headphone-hungry, cinematic soundscapes for the digital age. Whilst fourth album We Were Exploding Anyway delves deeper into the electronic undercurrent of their music, the band have always retained their post-rock core, thriving off a reputation as an unbelievable live act.

With their music used as the score for the Radio 4 adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five earlier this year, the band now create an original 90-minute score for Douglas Trumbull's science fiction classic Silent Running.
